Maaz spricht in seinem Buch über die narzisstische Störung als Basis der narzisstischen Gesellschaft. Dabei bezieht er sich nicht auf die Extreme des Größenselbst-Narzissten oder des Größenklein-Narzissten. Vielmehr sieht er die Angepasstheit der Masse an ihre Umwelt als das eigentliche Problem.

Ich spreche auch von der großen Zahl von Menschen, die gut angepasst an die Verhältnisse und Erwartungen ihrer Umwelt relativ unauffällig, eigentlich normal und ganz anständig leben und gemessen am Zeitgeist sich auch als erfolgreich einschätzen können - obwohl sie mit einem schwachen und brüchigen Selbst von sich selbst entfremdet sind. (...) Die Grenze zwischen 'noch normal' und 'schon pathologisch' sind fließend, und durch das, was 'alle' machen, ist die Bewertung verzerrt.

Maaz speaks in his book about the narcissistic disorder as the basis of narcissistic society. He does not refer to the extremes of the Größenselbst-narcissist or the Größenklein-narcissist. Rather, he sees the adaptation of the masses to their environment as the real problem.

I am also talking about a large number of people who, well adapted to the conditions and expectations of their environment, live relatively inconspicuously, actually live normally and decently, and who can judge themselves to be successful in terms of the Zeitgeist - even though they are alienated from themselves with a weak and fragile self. (...) The boundary between 'still normal' and 'already pathological' is blurred, and because of what 'everyone' is doing makes the assessment distorted.
